Dog-friendly stays
Bring the dog: a dog-friendly cottage in Trawden, Pendle
Spring Cottage welcomes up to 2 dogs. The back garden is enclosed, the walks start at the door, and the village pub welcomes dogs too.
Spring Cottage is a 300-year-old stone cottage in Trawden, near Colne, between Pendle Hill and Wycoller. Up to 2 dogs (or other well-behaved pets) are welcome per booking. There's a vestibule for muddy paws, a private south-facing back garden enclosed by a planted boundary, and footpaths onto farmland and moor within minutes of the front door.
House rules for dogs
- Up to 2 pets per booking, declared when you book.
- House-trained, please, and kept off beds and sofas.
- Please don't leave them alone in the cottage.
- Bring their bedding, and clear up after them in the garden and village.
- Keep them on a lead near livestock: there are sheep on the lanes and in the fields.
The full wording is in our house rules.
Walks from the door
Four of our walks start in the village, so you never need the car:
- Trawden to Wycoller: 4 miles one way over farmland, with pulpit stiles. Lead near livestock.
- Lumb Spout and Boulsworth Hill: 5.5 miles onto open moor with sheep.
- Boulsworth ridge and Wycoller: 10 miles, with ladder stiles at Watersheddles, so it suits fit dogs that can be lifted.
- Coldwell Reservoirs and Wycoller: 7.5 miles of moorland and farmland with sheep.
More gentle strolls are on the walks page, and there's lots more on Wycoller.
Off the lead
High above the village on Keighley Road, Trawden Recreation Ground is a big field surrounded by sturdy drystone walls, with views to Pendle Hill. Pendle Council's dog rules for sports grounds place no restrictions on dogs here. It's a walled field rather than a secure dog field, so it suits dogs with good recall. Football pitches are used from August to May, mostly at weekends, so keep well clear of games, and please pick up after your dog.
On the moors and farmland
- Leads around livestock, always. On open access land (most of the moorland here) dogs must be on a short lead from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds, and near livestock at any time.
- Cattle. If cattle threaten you, let your dog off the lead so you can both get to safety.
- Stiles. Some walks have ladder or pulpit stiles; each walk page says what to expect.
- Water. Carry it: there's none on the tops.
Dog-friendly pubs and days out
The Trawden Arms in the village welcomes dogs. Nearby, the Emmott Arms at Laneshaw Bridge (certain rooms; mention it when booking), the Alma Inn (bar, on a lead), Black Lane Ends (bar), the Pendle Inn and Barley Mow in Barley, and Boyce's Barrel in Colne all welcome dogs. Skipton Castle, Bolton Abbey and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway take dogs too (not on its Christmas Elf Explorer trains); Thornton Hall farm park and Queen Street Mill do not. Policies change, so check with each venue before you go. See pubs and restaurants near Trawden and Colne.
Questions
How many dogs can we bring?
Up to 2 well-behaved pets per booking (most guests bring dogs). Please tell us when you book.
Is the garden enclosed?
Yes. The private, south-facing back garden is enclosed by a planted boundary of hedging and planting rather than walls.
Is the Trawden Arms dog-friendly?
Yes. The community-owned Trawden Arms, a few minutes' walk from the cottage, welcomes dogs.
Where can my dog run off the lead?
Trawden Recreation Ground on Keighley Road is a big walled field that local dog walkers love. It isn't a secure dog field, so it suits dogs with good recall. Keep clear of football matches (August to May, mostly weekends).
Do dogs need to be on a lead on the moors?
On open access land, which covers most of the moorland here, dogs must be on a short lead from 1 March to 31 July, and near livestock at any time of year.
