The Cottage
Inside Spring Cottage
Old stone, new comforts. Sleeps four in two bedrooms, plus a baby under 2 in a travel cot, with one bathroom, a stove and a sunny garden.
The story
Some houses are pretty. This one was lived in.
Spring Cottage was our family home before it was anyone's holiday, and it still runs like one: proper pans in the kitchen, a sofa big enough for everyone, and a garden where the only noise is the birds.
It's between 300 and 400 years old, one of Trawden's older stone houses, and we renovated the whole house. We left the stone walls bare where they deserved to be seen and put the money into the things you notice at the end of a long walk: a hot rain shower, a bath, a warm stove and wifi.

Room by room
Where everything is
The vestibule
You come in through a small entrance porch. Hang the wet coats here and leave the muddy boots behind. (The walks start at the door.)
Sitting and dining room
One open-plan room built around a multi-fuel stove. There's a large corner sofa, a new 50-inch smart TV, a Marshall Bluetooth speaker for your music, and a table and chairs if you'd rather eat by the fire than in the kitchen.
Kitchen
Modern and properly equipped, looking out over the back garden. There's a breakfast bar, a dishwasher and a washing machine, plus a Ninja 15-in-1 air fryer, a juicer and a pod coffee machine for slow mornings. Or let someone else cook: see where to eat.
Bedroom one: the double
At the back of the house, overlooking the south-facing garden, with a double bed and bedroom furniture.
Bedroom two: the twin
At the front, with two single beds, exposed stonework and original art on the walls. Good for children or friends.
Babies: travel cot and highchair
The beds sleep four: the double and the two singles. A baby under 2 is welcome as a fifth guest in a travel cot, which we provide free (or bring your own). There's a highchair for mealtimes too. That's the only way to make five: we can't take a fifth guest aged 2 or over, or more than one baby.
Bathroom
A bath with a rain shower over it, a basin and WC, all set against stonework we think is around 300 years old.
Box room
A small room for suitcases, with spare linen and cleaning things. It isn't a bedroom, so nobody can sleep in it.
Gardens
A small garden at the front. At the back, a private, secluded garden that faces south and is a sun trap in summer. Take your coffee or a glass of wine out and listen to the birds. The back garden is enclosed by a planted boundary (planting and hedging rather than walls), so it's a safe spot for dogs to potter. More in our dog-friendly guide.
Before you book: about the stairs
The stairs are steep, as they are in most cottages this old. Most guests manage them fine, but they may be hard for anyone with limited mobility, and small children will need a hand. Please look at the photo before you book. If you're unsure, ask Alex.
